The First Time the Word "Cosplay" Appeared

Otaku History lesson of the day: How the word "Cosplay" came about.

The word "Cosplay" first appeared on a magazine called "My Anime".

As noted by wikipedia, Nobuyuki Takahashi was the man who coined the term "cosplay". However, they seemed to be confused about how it came about. The fact is Takahashi abbreviated the word "Costume play" into "cosplay" (コスプレ) in an article he wrote for My Anime (released in June 1983), because "costume play" was not correct English he was told. Takahashi himself showed us the actual magazine where the word first appeared.

MyAnime is natsukasii... . In 80s, there're five (Animage, AniMedia, The Anime, MyAnime, Animec) plus one(Monthly OUT)  leading Anime magazines. The Anime, MyAnime, Animec were gone in late 20th centuries. I liked Animec so much since It often covered underground  culture.

If you're interested in Japanease Anime magazine history, I can higlhy recommend  a Wikipedia-entry(JP-ONLY).
